As we come into 2022, social media is now more apparent than ever; however, with so many platforms to choose from, it seems to be becoming more of an obsession to some than a must-have.

Twenty years ago, one of the primary forms of social media was Windows/MSN messenger, used heavily to connect with friends and family. It was widely used, but it wasn’t as relied on as platforms are now. Instant messaging at the time wasn’t a necessity; little did we know that it would pave the way towards several advancements to come.

Around ten years ago, social media started to dominate the world; with more people getting smartphones, everything became a lot more accessible and at our fingertips with a moments notice. Having this much access to social media has meant that the world can connect like never before, with family and friends from all corners of the globe able to connect within seconds.

Social media seems to be essential for many people nowadays; with just under 4 billion users worldwide, it is no wonder so many people are finding it easier to connect through it rather than in person. We now have so many people who have become “famous” because of social media; it seems that the new job that kids want to do is to be a famous Youtuber or Tiktoker instead of being an astronaut.

Social media is now at a point where it is becoming overwhelming and dominant in everyday life, to the point where people are becoming obsessed from a young age. Many younger kids now feel disadvantaged if they don’t have a smartphone to keep up with the latest social media trends.
